Etymology: < hot adj. + flush n.² So called on account of the frequent symptom of heightening of facial colour. Compare earlier hot flash n.

A sudden feeling of feverish heat accompanied by perspiration, often with a heightening of facial colour; spec. (in later use) a menopausal symptom of this kind (usually in plural). Also figurative.
