单词 hot dog
释义

hot dogn.adj.int.

(in senses A. 1 and B.)Brit. /ˈhɒt dɒɡ/, U.S. /ˈhɑt ˌdɑɡ/ (in senses A. 2 and C.)Brit. /ˌhɒt ˈdɒɡ/, U.S. /ˌhɑt ˈdɑɡ/
Forms: see hot adj. and n.1 and dog n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hot adj., dog n.1
Etymology: < hot adj. + dog n.1Both senses A. 1 and A. 2a appear to have originated in U.S. college slang. With sense A. 1 compare dog n.1 14, which is attested in U.S. slang from c1890 (see Hist. Dict. Amer. Slang at cited word); the sausage was probably so named because it was popularly believed to contain dog meat (see further A. F. Smith Oxf. Compan. Amer. Food & Drink (2007) 303–4). Influence of sausage dog n. at sausage n. Compounds 4 has also been suggested, but seems unlikely since that compound is first attested later. With the modification by hot adj. compare earlier red-hot n. 3. With sense A. 2a compare hot adj. 12c and dog n.1 5b.
Originally U.S.
A. n.
1.
a. As a mass noun. Sausage meat, esp. that of a frankfurter or wienerwurst.Originally referring to sausage served hot, but in later use as a colloquial term for frankfurter or wienerwurst irrespective of temperature.
