单词 hosanna
释义

hosannaint.n.v.

Brit. /hə(ʊ)ˈzanə/, U.S. /hoʊˈzænə/
Forms: Old English osanna, Middle English ossanna, Middle English–1600s osanna, 1500s hosianna, osan, 1600s hosannah, 1500s– hosanna.
Etymology: < late Latin osanna, hosanna (Vulgate), < Greek ὠσαννά, ὡσαννά, representing the Hebrew hōshaʿ-nā, abbreviated form of hōshīʿāh-nnā save, pray! Compare Psalms 118:25, 86:2. In Rabbinical literature the phrase occurs as a word in yōm-hōshaʿnā, ‘hosanna-day’, the seventh day of the Feast of Booths, also as a name for the palm (or willow) branches carried in procession.
A. int.
An exclamation, meaning ‘Save now!’ or ‘Save, pray!’, occurring in Psalm 18:25, which forms part of the Hallel at the Passover, and was in frequent liturgical use with the Jews, as an appeal for deliverance, and an acclamation or ascription of praise to God.At the entry of Jesus in Jerusalem it was shouted by the Galilean pilgrims in recognition of His Messiahship (Matthew 21:9, 15; Mark 11:9, 10; John 12:13), and it has been used from early times in the Christian Church as an ascription of praise to God and Christ.
