Etymology: Old English horig , < horh, horw-, hor-, hore n. + -y suffix1. The ordinary Old English horig naturally gave Middle English hori , hory . Chaucer's horowe (cited by Bullokar and Cockeram as horrow ) attaches itself apparently to the inflectional horg- in horg-um , etc.: compare holy adj. and n., hallow n.1
