Etymology: < French aplome ( R. J. Haüy Traité de minéralogie (1801) IV. 337) < ancient Greek ἁπλοῦς (uncontracted ἁπλόος ) simple (see haplo- comb. form), so called in allusion to the simplicity of its (supposed) fundamental crystal form.With the form haplome compare discussion at haplo- comb. form.

A brownish or greenish variety of andradite garnet containing some manganese and forming crystals with twelve rhomboidal faces.
