单词 holy ghost
释义

Holy Ghostn.

Brit. /ˌhəʊlɪ ˈɡəʊst/, U.S. /ˌhoʊli ˈɡoʊst/
Forms: see holy adj. and ghost n.; also (with coalescence of preceding the) early Middle English theli gast, Middle English tholygoost, Middle English tholigost.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: holy adj., ghost n.
Etymology: < holy adj. + ghost n. (compare ghost n. 4a), after post-classical Latin spiritus sanctus (see Holy Spirit n.). Compare Old Dutch halog gast (Middle Dutch heilige geest , Dutch Heilige Geest ), Old Saxon hēlag gēst (Middle Low German hillich geist ), Old High German heilag geist (Middle High German heilec geist , German Heiliger Geist ). Compare Frover-Ghost at frover n. 2. Compare later Holy Spirit n. (which is now the more common expression in sense 1).In Old English (and early Middle English) the first element is usually treated as a normal adjective inflected for case. In Middle English (from early Middle English onwards) and (less commonly) in early modern English also written as one word, although word division in Middle English examples frequently reflects editorial choices of modern editors of texts, rather than the practice of the manuscripts. Similar forms, as well as more distinctive contractions, are also found in other languages at a similar period; compare e.g. Middle Dutch heileghegheest, heilegeest, Middle High German heiligeist (early modern German hailigaist).
1. Chiefly with the and capital initials. The Third Person (person n. 6a) of the Trinity, God as spiritually active in the world; = Holy Spirit n. Cf. father n. 2b, son n.1 2.
