Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French astronautique.
Etymology: < French astronautique (1927, attributed to ‘J. H. Rosny aîné’ (pseudonym for J. H. H. Boëx-Borel)) < astro- astro- comb. form + nautique nautics n.: see -ic suffix 2. Compare earlier aeronautics n. and later astronautic adj.The French word was used by R. Esnault-Pelterie in a paper delivered to La Société Astronomique de France on 8 June 1927 and published in print in L'exploration par fusées de la très haute atmosphère et de la possibilité des voyages interplanétaires (1928); he attributes the word there (on p. 94) to J. H. Rosny; see Notes & Queries (1960) 205 312 and Amer. Speech (1961) 36 169.
