单词 homosexual
释义

homosexualadj.n.

Brit. /ˌhəʊmə(ʊ)ˈsɛkʃʊ(ə)l/, /ˌhəʊmə(ʊ)ˈsɛkʃ(ᵿ)l/, /ˌhəʊmə(ʊ)ˈsɛksjʊ(ə)l/, /ˌhɒmə(ʊ)ˈsɛkʃʊ(ə)l/, /ˌhɒmə(ʊ)ˈsɛkʃ(ᵿ)l/, /ˌhɒmə(ʊ)ˈsɛksjʊ(ə)l/, U.S. /ˌhoʊmoʊˈsɛkʃ(əw)əl/, /ˌhoʊməˈsɛkʃ(əw)əl/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; originally modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: homo- comb. form, sexual adj.
Etymology: < homo- comb. form + sexual adj., originally after German homosexual, now rare (K. M. Kertbeny 1869, also as noun: see note). Compare French homosexuel (1891, apparently after German), and German homosexuell, now the usual form (1878; 1898 also as noun). The German adjective homosexual , along with its noun use and several derivatives, was apparently first printed in Das Gemeinschädliche des § 143 des preussischen Strafgesetzbuches (1869) 30, 54, and passim (by K. M. Kertbeny, originally published anonymously), which challenges a law against homosexuality; the term is contrasted in this text with †normalsexual heterosexual, lit. ‘normally sexual’. Kertbeny also already used homosexual in a letter dated 6 May 1868, alongside heterosexual heterosexual adj. In German, both these terms have now been superseded by their equivalents in -sexuell , apparently after sexuell sexual adj. Kertbeny's terminology was adopted by G. Jäger, whose work in turn informed R. von Krafft-Ebing's Pyschopathia Sexualis, which was known to J. A. Symonds (compare quot. 1891 at sense A. 1a), and which was also translated into English (from the 7th revised edition of 1892; compare e.g. quot. 1892). Later uses with specific reference to male homosexuality are probably influenced by folk-etymological association of the first element with classical Latin homo human being, person, in post-classical Latin also ‘adult male human being’ (see homo n.1 and compare the discussion at man n.1).
Chiefly Psychology and Psychoanalysis in early use.
A. adj.
1.
a. Characterized by sexual or romantic attraction to, or sexual activity with, people of the same sex; involving or relating to same-sex desire or sexual activity. Both as an adjective and a noun, homosexual was for much of the first half of the 20th cent. the most widely accepted term used to refer to same-sex desire and activity, and to same-sex oriented individuals, especially men. While the term is still used in many formal contexts, from the 1960s onwards gay became preferred by many same-sex oriented men, who regarded homosexual as too formal and clinical, or as being associated with a history of the treatment of homosexuality as a medical or psychiatric condition and the criminalization of sex between men in many jurisdictions. When referring to same-sex desire and relations between women, the term lesbian is often preferred.
