单词 homo habilis
释义

Homo habilisn.

Brit. /ˌhəʊməʊ ˈhabᵻlɪs/, U.S. /ˌhoʊmoʊ ˈhæbələs/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Homo habilis.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Homo habilis, species name (L. S. B. Leakey et al. 1964, in Nature 4 Apr. 8/1: see quot. 1964) < Homo , genus name (see homo n.1) + scientific Latin habilis , specific name, specific use of classical Latin habilis skilful, able (see able adj.). Compare earlier Homo sapiens n. and Homo erectus n.Compare:1964 L. S. B. Leakey et al. in Nature 4 Apr. 8/1 Genus Homo Linnæus. Species habilis sp. nov. (Note: The specific name is taken from the Latin, meaning ‘able, handy, mentally skilful, vigorous’. We are indebted to Prof. Raymond Dart for the suggestion that habilis would be a suitable name for the new species.)
Palaeontology.
An extinct hominid that is the earliest and most primitive known member of the human genus Homo, living in Africa between about 2.3 and 1.4 million years ago. Homo habilis was the successor to the australopithecines, but it is not clear if it was the ancestor of Homo ergaster, H. erectus, and modern man.
