Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Archaeopteryx.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Archaeopteryx (1862 or earlier) < archaeo- archaeo- comb. form + ancient Greek πτέρυξ wing, bird (see pterygo- comb. form).
Palaeontology.
A genus of small birdlike theropod dinosaurs of the late Jurassic, having teeth, feathers, wings with claws, and a long bony tail; (also archaeopteryx) a dinosaur of this genus.Archaeopteryx is an important transitional fossil form, showing a combination of avian and reptilian characteristics. Thought to have been capable of gliding, or perhaps of limited flapping flight, it was long considered the earliest known bird, but is now classified among a group of feathered theropods closely related to the ancestor of modern birds.

1862 Med. Times & Gaz. 26 Apr. 445/2 Von Meyer's feather, which he termed Archæopteryx, is, however, completely eclipsed in interest by the intelligence made public by the venerable A. Wagner, of Münich.
1866 C. Darwin Origin of Species (ed. 4) ix. 367 That strange bird, the Archeopteryx, with a long lizard-like tail,..its wings furnished with two free claws, has been discovered in oolitic slates of Solenhofen.
1925 R. S. Lull Ways of Life ii. iv. 171 We have in Archæopteryx..a splendid example of a transitional type, a reptilian bird.
1985 E. H. Colbert Wandering Lands & Animals (new ed.) Gloss. 294 Archaeopteryx, the first bird, from the Upper Jurassic of central Europe. The skeleton was reptilian and there were teeth in the jaws. The preserved specimens show clear imprints of feathers in the rock.
2012 S. L. Brusatte Dinosaur Paleobiol. iv. 100/2 All birds, even primitive species such as Archaeopteryx and Confuciusornis, were capable of at least weak flight, powered by their wings, large chest muscles, and asymmetrical vaned feathers.
