Etymology: < archaeo- comb. form + -grapher comb. form, originally after French archaeographe (1796 in the passage translated in quot. 1804). Compare archaeography n., and earlier archaeographical adj.
An expert or specialist in archaeography; (now) esp. (chiefly with reference to Russia and eastern Europe) a scholar who discovers, studies, or publishes ancient or historical manuscripts and documents (cf. archaeography n. 2).
