Etymology: modern Latin (L. Trattinick 1812, in Archiv der Gewächskunde I. 55; formerly used by N. J. Jacquin Icones Plantarum Horti Schönbrunnensis (1797) I. 60 for a plant now included in the genus Cornutia), < the name of N. T. Host (1761–1834), Austrian physician.
A plant of the genus so named (formerly called funkia n.), native to Japan and eastern Asia and belonging to the family Liliaceæ; a plantain-lily.
