Etymology: < home n.1 + stall n.1 Compare post-classical Latin hamestallum (1274 in a British source; < English). Compare homestead n.The form hempstall shows development of an excrescent consonant (compare discussion at homestead n.). Frequent in place names, especially in minor names and field names, as Randulueshamstal, Essex (1210), Hamstal, Media Ridewar, Staffordshire (1242; 1236 as Hamstede Ridwale; now Hamstall Ridware), Hamstalfeld, Hertfordshire (1261), Botelers Hamstall, Essex (1372; now Hamstel), etc.
