Etymology: < classical Latin honōrārium voluntary contribution to the treasury, especially by magistrates on entering office, fee for professional services, use as noun of neuter singular of honōrārius honorary adj. Compare French honoraire (1611 in Cotgrave). Compare honorary n.1 N.E.D. (1899) also gives the pronunciation (hǫnŏrēə·riɒ̆m) /hɒnəˈrɛərɪəm/.
A gift given by way of honouring or paying respect to someone or something; spec. a (voluntary) fee for professional services which are rendered nominally without charge.
