Etymology: Apparently < hopping adj.¹ + John n., although the semantic motivation is unclear. In β. forms apparently with remodelling after to hop in at hop v.¹ Phrases 5.It has been suggested that sense 2 reflects an alteration of French pois-pigeon pigeon pea n., but this poses both semantic and phonological problems.
