Chiefly historical in later use.
The action or practice of going from door to door collecting donations; spec. (in the 15th and 16th centuries) the action or practice of collecting funds for the parish in this way. Also: an instance of this. See note at hoggler n.Recorded earliest in hoggling money n. at Compounds.Quots. 1859, 1888 appear to represent a late survival of the word in the regional English of Pembrokeshire.
