单词 hoggard
释义

hoggardn.

Forms: 1600s hoggerd, 1600s–1700s 1900s hoggard.
Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: hogherd n.
Etymology: Probably a variant of hogherd n., perhaps originally simply a spelling form (by association with words in -ard suffix) reflecting a pronunciation without /h/ in the second syllable. Perhaps compare also later hogward n. at hog n.1 Compounds 2a.Earlier currency is probably implied by surnames: compare Hoggard (15th cent.), and also Hoggerd (16th cent.), and perhaps also Hogget, Hogged (early 17th cent.). Compare also the field name Hoggards greene, Westmorland (1588). Eng. Dial. Dict. (at cited word) records the word as still in use in south Surrey in 1901.
Obsolete.
= hogherd n.
