单词 hogboat
释义

hogboatn.

Brit. /ˈhɒɡbəʊt/, U.S. /ˈhɔɡˌboʊt/, /ˈhɑɡˌboʊt/
Origin: Either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hagboat n.; hog n.1, boat n.1
Etymology: Either an alteration of hagboat n., by folk-etymological association with hog n.1, or directly < hog n.1 + boat n.1, perhaps so called on account of its broad shape.
Originally and chiefly English regional (Sussex). Now historical.
A relatively small, broad-bodied, decked boat with a narrow transom, leeboards, and a two-masted spritsail rig, used until the late 19th cent. for fishing off the Sussex coast.
