Etymology: < French hiéroglyphique (1529 in Hatzfeld & Darmesteter) or late Latin hieroglyphicus, < Greek ἱερογλυϕικός, < ἱερός sacred + γλυϕή carving (compare γλυϕικός). The adjective was used substantively by Plutarch, τὰ ἱερογλυϕικά (sc. γράμματα) letters, writing, whence hieroglyphics.
