单词 histoplasmosis
释义

histoplasmosisn.

Brit. /ˌhɪstə(ʊ)plazˈməʊsɪs/, U.S. /ˌhɪstoʊplæzˈmoʊsəs/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Histoplasma , -osis suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Histoplasma, genus name (S. T. Darling 1906, in Jrnl. Amer. Med. Assoc. 28 Apr. 1285/1; < histo- histo- comb. form + plasma plasma n.) + -osis suffix.Darling originally identified the organism Histoplasma capsulata as a protozoan, but it was later recognized to be a dimorphic fungus.
Infection with the ascomycete fungus Histoplasma capsulatum, often asymptomatic but also occurring as a mild, acute, febrile pneumonitis, and, less commonly, as a chronic fibrosing or cavitating lung disease or a disseminated infection involving the reticuloendothelial system, esp. of the spleen, liver, and bone marrow.Histoplasmosis occurs in many parts of the world but is particularly common in the central United States. Infection typically results from the inhalation of fungal spores, found especially in soil containing bird or bat droppings.
