Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; apparently originally modelled on a Sanskrit lexical item. Etymons: hippo- comb. form, holocaust n.
Etymology: < hippo- comb. form + -caust (in holocaust n. (compare sense 1 at that entry), in early use apparently after Sanskrit aśvamedha ( < aśva horse (see hippo- comb. form) + medha sacrificial offering, animal sacrifice).
Obsolete. rare.
The ritual killing of a horse as an offering to a god or gods.In the Vedic ritual referred to in quots. 1858 and 1866, the horse was typically not burned, but portions of its body were cooked. See M. Stutley Folklore 80 (1969) 253–61.
