Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Hippeastrum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Hippeastrum (see quot. 1821) < ancient Greek ἱππεύς horseman, knight ( < ἵππος horse (see hippo- comb. form) + -εύς , suffix forming masculine nouns) + ἄστρον star (see astro- comb. form), perhaps so called with allusion to Linnaeus's status as a knight in the Swedish ‘Order of the Polar Star’ (from 1753). Compare knight's star n. at knight n. Compounds 1b.
Botany.
Any of the bulbous plants of the genus Hippeastrum (family Amaryllidaceae) which are native to tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, and are frequently cultivated as houseplants for their large, showy flowers. Also (in form Hippeastrum): the genus itself.Hippeastrums were originally placed in the genus Amaryllis, by which name they are still commonly known.
