Etymology: < scientific Latin Hipparion, genus name (J. de Christol 1832, in Ann. sci. & indust. du midi de la France 1 215) < Hellenistic Greek ἱππάριον pony, already in ancient Greek in sense ‘wretched horse’ (as a term of contempt) < ἵππος horse (see hippo- comb. form) + -άριον, extended form of -ιον, diminutive suffix.

Palaeontology.

Any of the small three-toed equids of the extinct genus Hipparion, known from fossils found in Miocene to Pleistocene deposits. Also (in form Hipparion): the genus itself.
