Etymology: Scots (and north English) representation of Middle English hōgh, Old English hóh, < ablaut grade hanh- of hang v. (compare Gothic faurahâh curtain). Compare hoe n.1, how n.2; also, for form, cleuch n., clough n.; and, for later phonology, Scots beuch , bew = bough n.
Scottish and northern dialect.
