Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hetero- comb. form, -phily comb. form.
Etymology: < hetero- comb. form + -phily comb. form. In sense 1 after French hétérophilie (1841 in Fourier).
1. A taste, opinion, or liking for something which is not shared by another. Obsolete. rare.

2. Sociology. A tendency for people to be attracted to those who are different to themselves. Also: such differences between individuals or groups. Opposed to homophily (see homophily n.2).Popularly reflected in the saying opposites attract.
