Etymology: < Greek ἑταίρα, feminine of ἑταῖρος companion.
(In ancient Greece, and hence transferred) A female companion or paramour, a mistress, a concubine; a courtesan, harlot. ‘In Attic mostly opposed to a lawful wife, and so with various shades of meaning, from a concubine (who might be a wife in all but the legal qualification of citizenship) down to a courtesan’ (Liddell & Scott).
