Hindustaniadj.n.

Brit. /ˌhɪndʊˈstɑːni/, /ˌhɪndʊˈstani/, U.S. /ˌhɪnduˈstɑni/, /ˌhɪnduˈstæni/
Forms: 1800s Hindoostanee, 1800s Hindoostani, 1800s Hindoosthanee, 1800s Hindostanee, 1800s Hindostani, 1800s Hindostaunee, 1800s Hindosthanee, 1800s Hindustanee, 1800s–1900s Hindusthanee, 1800s–1900s Indostanee, 1800s–1900s Industanee (rare), 1800s– Hindustani, 1800s– Hindusthani.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Hindi hindustānī; Urdu hindustānī; Persian hindūstānī.
Etymology: < (i) Hindi hindustānī and Urdu hindustānī (adjective) Indian, (noun) Indian person, also denoting the Hindustani language (see note), and its etymon (ii) Persian hindūstānī, in the same senses, < the name of hindūstān (see Hindustan n.) + , suffix expressing belonging. Compare French hindoustani, noun (1693 as indistanni, with reference to a person). In use with reference to the language, the Persian (and hence Urdu) word originally denoted the prestige variety of Hindi spoken in the Delhi region (Hindi Kharī Bolī , Khaṛī Bolī ). With the corresponding use in English (see sense B. 1) compare the rare, but earlier English adjective †Hindustanic (1778 as Hindostanic ; < the name of Hindustan + -ic suffix), as well as post-classical Latin Hindostanicus , adjective (1745 or earlier). Compare also earlier Hindi n. and Hindui n. Compare further Dutch Hindoestans , adjective and noun (1726 or earlier), which may underlie the following passage:1772 G. Hadley Gram. Remarks Lang. called Moors Pref. Gram. p. xi Manuscripts have indeed been handed about, ill spelt, with a confused mixture of Persian, Indostans [1784 Hindostanic], and Bengals. Variant forms. On forms with -th- (e.g. Hindusthani) see the discussion of the place name at Hindustan n. On forms with initial I- see the discussion at Hindustan n.
