Forms: Middle English– apprise, 1500s– apprize.
Etymology: < Old French aprise-r, earlier aprisier, < à to + prisier , preisier to price, prize, praise; or perhaps directly on phrase à pris , as if mettre à prix . Retained in Scots Law, and used occasionally by English writers, but ordinarily represented in English by appraise v., in its analysis the same word, but with a different history. Compare also praise adj. and prize n.1 and adj.
archaic.
1. Scots Law. To put a selling price upon, put up for sale at a set price, appraise.
