单词 high priest
释义

high priestn.

Brit. /ˌhʌɪ ˈpriːst/, U.S. /ˈˌhaɪ ˈprist/
Forms: see high adj. and n.2 and priest n.; also with capital initials.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: high adj., priest n.
Etymology: < high adj. + priest n. Compare German Hohepriester (1522 or earlier denoting the chief priest of the ancient Jewish temple, 1525 or earlier applied to Christ). With reference to the chief priest of the ancient Jewish temple, the Septuagint and the New Testament use Hellenistic Greek ἀρχιερεύς to translate various Hebrew terms: kōhēn hā-gāḏōl , lit. ‘great priest’, (less frequently) kōhēn hā-rō'š , lit. ‘head priest’, or simply kōhēn ‘priest’. In the New Testament (Hebrews, earliest in Hebrews 3:1), ἀρχιερεύς is also applied to Christ as maker of the Atonement. The Latin equivalents in the Vulgate vary; the Gospels, for instance, use princeps sacerdotum ‘leader of the priests’ (Matthew, Luke), summus sacerdos ‘highest priest’ (Mark), and pontifex pontifex n. (John).
1.
a. The chief priest of a religion or religious group, esp. the chief priest of the ancient Jewish temple (cf. priest n. 2b); (also) any high-ranking priest.
