Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek ὁμαλός , -graphic comb. form.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὁμαλός even, level, equal (see same adj.) + -graphic comb. form, after French homalographique (1854 or earlier in sense 1; 1858 in sense 2, in E.-Q. Le Gendre Anatomie chirurgicale homalographique, the source referred to in quot. 1860).In form homolographic by association with words in homo- comb. form.
1. Cartography. Designating a method of projection in which equal areas on the earth's surface are represented by equal areas on a map or chart; (of a map or chart) produced using such a method. Cf. equal-area adj. at equal adj., n., and adv. Compounds 3.Although there are several kinds of equal-area projection, the term homalographic is associated esp. with Mollweide's projection (see Mollweide projection at Mollweide n. Compounds 2).
