Etymology: < classical Latin aperient-, aperiēns, present participle of aperīre to open, cognate with or formed similarly to Sanskrit apavṛ- to uncover, to open, and Old Church Slavonic otvoriti , Old Prussian etwerreis (2nd singular imperative), Lithuanian atverti , all in the sense ‘to open’ < the Indo-European base of classical Latin ab off, away (see ab- prefix) + the Indo-European base of Sanskrit vṛ- to cover.With use as noun compare post-classical Latin aperiens laxative medicine (13th cent. in a British source), use as noun of classical Latin aperiēns, present participle.
