Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: histo- comb. form, -trophic comb. form.
Etymology: < histo- comb. form + -trophic comb. form. In sense 2 perhaps as an alteration of histotropic adj. (attested earlier in this sense).
Biology.
1. Originally: causing the formation of or providing nourishment for tissues of the body. In later use also: spec. designating a stage of embryonic development when the embryo obtains nourishment from maternal tissue or glandular secretions; of or relating to this stage.
