Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Apatosaurus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Apatosaurus (O. C. Marsh 1877, in Amer. Jrnl. Sci. 114 514) < ancient Greek ἀπατᾶν to deceive + -o -o- connective + σαῦρος lizard (see -saurus comb. form), so called with reference to the similarity of certain bones to those of unrelated reptiles.

Palaeontology.

A genus of herbivorous late Jurassic dinosaurs which were sauropods allied to Diplodocus, but had a more heavily built skeleton and were one of the largest land animals known; (also apatosaurus) a dinosaur of this genus. Also called Brontosaurus. Apatosaurus superseded Brontosaurus as the valid genus name of this dinosaur (see quot. 1903), although the latter is still in general use.

1878 Academy 5 Jan. 14/2 Under the name of Apatosaurus a gigantic dinosaur from the Jurassic strata on the east of the Rocky Mountains has been described by Prof. Marsh.

1903 Publ. Field Columbian Mus.: Geol. Ser. 2 170 As the term ‘Apatosaurus’ has priority, ‘Brontosaurus’ will be regarded as a synonym.
