Etymology: < post-classical Latin hereditation-, hereditatio inheritance (from 1100 in British sources; from 12th cent. in continental sources) < hereditat- , past participial stem of hereditare to leave by inheritance (Vetus Latina), to inherit, to make heir (Vulgate; < classical Latin hērēd- , hērēs heir n. + -itāre -itate suffix) + classical Latin -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French ereditation, hereditacion succession, inheritance (first half of the 15th cent. in two apparently isolated instances).
