Forms: Also (anglicized or as French) 1600s hemine, 1700s emine, ( esmine).
Etymology: < Latin hēmīna, < Greek ἡμίνα, < ἡμι- half-. Compare French emine, hemine ‘a measure that containes three Possons; and comes to, in weight, about seuen and a halfe of our moderne ounces’ (Cotgrave).
A liquid measure (originally ancient Sicilian) of about half a pint; also, a measure for corn (see above, and quot. 17562).
