Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: helix n., -ase suffix.
Etymology: < helic-, taken as the stem of helix n. (reflecting the stems of its Latin and Greek etymons) + -ase suffix, in allusion to the double helix of DNA molecules.The name has been attributed to H. Hoffmann-Berling (1920–2011), German molecular biologist, one of the co-authors of the article cited in quot. 1978.

Any of a class of enzymes which bind to a nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) and catalyse the separation of its strands to enable replication or other processes to occur.
