Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Henry.
Etymology: < Henry, the name of eight kings of England, and the name in English of various kings of France and Spain with the corresponding forename (compare e.g. French Henri, Spanish Enrique).Compare Middle French, French henri, denoting any of various gold coins, named after various Spanish, French, and English kings (1477), and Middle French henricque, denoting a coin struck in the reign of Henry (Enrique) IV of Castille (1492), and also Middle French, French henricus, denoting a gold coin first struck in 1549, during the reign of Henri II of France (1573 in Rabelais, or earlier).

As a modifier: designating any of various coins minted during the reign of a monarch named Henry, esp. one minted when Henry VI was King of England (1422–61, 1470–1), as in Henry groat, Henry noble, etc. Formerly also in simple use: †a coin of this type (obsolete).Cf. Etymology: < the name of Alexander Henry, Scottish gunsmith (1818–94), who invented a barrel with this pattern of rifling (patented in November 1860).
Now historical and somewhat rare.
As a modifier.
1. Originally: designating a breech-loading single-shot rifle designed by Alexander Henry and having a barrel with polygonal rifling (see sense 2). In later use: designating the barrel of this rifle, as used in the Martini–Henry rifle (see Martini–Henry n.).

Etymology: < the name of Benjamin Tyler Henry, U.S. gunsmith and manufacturer (1821–98), who invented this kind of lever-action repeating rifle.
I. Compounds.
1. As a modifier. Designating a repeating rifle, designed in 1860 by Benjamin Tyler Henry, in which cartridges are loaded into the chamber by manipulating a lever attached to the trigger guard; as Henry rifle, Henry repeating rifle, etc.The Henry rifle is equipped with a magazine that holds sixteen cartridges and is capable of a high rate of fire that made it a popular firearm among Union forces during the American Civil War.

Etymology: < the name of Joseph Henry (1797–1878), U.S. physicist, who discovered electromagnetic induction independently of and at about the same time as Michael Faraday.
A unit of electrical inductance equal to: (a) the self-inductance of a circuit in which an electromotive force of one volt is induced by a current changing at a rate of one ampere per second (now incorporated in the International System of Units); (b) the mutual inductance of two coils in which an electromotive force of one volt is induced in one by a current changing in the other at a rate of one ampere per second.
