单词 henge
释义

hengen.

Brit. /hɛn(d)ʒ/, U.S. /hɛndʒ/
Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper name Stonehenge; proper name Woodhenge.
Etymology: Shortened < the names of Stonehenge (see Stonehenge n.) and (in sense 2 also) Woodhenge (see woodhenge n.). In sense 2 with reference to the earthwork forming part of both monuments (enclosing the respective stone and timber circles). This use of the term was coined by T. D. Kendrick (in the passage introduced by quot. 1932), with explicit reference to both Stonehenge and Woodhenge.Compare earlier use of henge in a discussion of a supposed etymology of the name of Stonehenge:1740 W. Stukeley Stonehenge ii. 8 Pendulous rocks are now called henges in Yorkshire, and I have been informed of another place there called Stonehenge, being natural rocks. So that I doubt not, Stonehenge in Saxon signifies the hanging stones. The Yorkshire place name cited in this passage has not been identified, but may have been a misinterpretation of the name of Stanage, a cliff in the West Riding, lit. ‘stone edge’ (1574; now Stanage Edge); perhaps associated by the author by analogy with Stonage, former variant of the name of Stonehenge.
