单词 hendeca-
释义

hendeca-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Inflections: Before a vowel hendec-.
Forms: 1600s– hendeca-, 1700s– endeca-.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ἑνδεκα-.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ἑνδεκα-, combining form (in e.g. ἑνδεκάχορδος eleven-stringed) of ἕνδεκα eleven < ἕν (neuter) one (see henad n.) + δέκα ten (see deca- comb. form). Compare French endéca- (formations in which are found from 1810 or earlier), scientific Latin endeca-, hendeca- (formations in which are found from 1776 or earlier).First attested in loans from Latin and French, of words ultimately of Greek origin (compare hendecagon n.); formations within English are found from the 17th cent. (compare hendecasyllable n., hendecarchy n. ). In use in chemistry, undec- comb. form is now preferred.
Forming nouns and adjectives in which hendeca- indicates the presence of eleven of something.
