Compare e.g. Hennechothe (c1160; now Hencott, Shropshire), Hennecotes (1299; now Hencotes (street name), Hexham, Northumberland). Compare also the surnames Wilelmus Hencote (c1275), Rob. del Hencote (1338). In later use perhaps reinforced by association with dove-cote at cote n.¹ 2b.
