Etymology: Old English arǽran , < a- prefix1 up, out + rǽran to rear v.1 In 15–17th cent. the r was corruptly doubled: see ar- prefix. The Old English arǽran , cognate with Gothic urraisjan , was the causative of arise v. The parallel form < Old Norse was araise v.
Obsolete.
