1943 E. Chain et al. in Brit. Jrnl. Exper. Path. XXIV. 119 A new antibiotic has been isolated in the crystalline state from culture filtrates of Aspergillus fumigatus, mut. helvola Yuill. It has been named helvolic acid.
1944 Jrnl. Bacteriol. 47 392 Helvolic acid is apparently identical with the fumigacin from which the gliotoxin fraction has been removed.
1949 H. W. Florey et al. Antibiotics i. 66 Helvolic acid..had some protective action against streptococcal infection in mice, but its other properties made it unsuitable for use in man.
1953 J. Ramsbottom Mushrooms & Toadstools xxiii. 289 Fumigacin (helvolic acid) produced by Aspergillus fumigatus has all the necessary qualities except that bacteria readily acquire resistance to it.
1965 P. K. C. Austwick in Raper & Fennell Genus Aspergillus vii. 106 Aspergillus fumigatus is known to produce three antibiotics that are toxic to experimental animals: fumigatin,..helvolic acid,..and gliotoxin.
