单词 hegemoniac
释义

hegemoniacn.adj.

Brit. /ˌhɛɡᵻˈməʊnɪak/, /ˌhɛdʒᵻˈməʊnɪak/, /ˌhiːɡᵻˈməʊnɪak/, /ˌhiːdʒᵻˈməʊnɪak/, U.S. /ˌhɛdʒəˈmoʊniˌæk/, /ˌhidʒəˈmoʊniˌæk/
Forms: 1600s hegemoniack, 1900s– hegemoniac.
Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Probably also partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: hegemonic n.; Greek ἡγεμόνιος , -ac suffix; hegemonic adj.
Etymology: As noun either an alteration (after nouns in -ac suffix) of hegemonic n., or perhaps < ancient Greek ἡγεμόνιος guiding, epithet of Hermes, guide of departed souls ( < ἡγεμών leader, chief (see hegemon n.) + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives) + -ac suffix. As adjective probably an alteration of hegemonic adj. after adjectives in -ac suffix, perhaps originally (in quot. 1959, where the author is a Belgian native speaker of French) after French (rare) hégémoniaque (1918 or earlier).
