1728 E. Chambers Cycl. (at cited word) The Heracleonites, after the Example of their Master, annull'd all the antient Prophecies; holding, that St. John was really the Voice that proclaimed and pointed out the Messiah but that the Prophecies were only empty Sounds, and signified nothing.
1882 P. Schaff et al. Relig. Encycl. I. 789 Irenaeus simply says that the Herakleonites, a Gnostic sect, anointed the dying with a mixture of oil and water.
