Etymology: < hept- (in hepta- comb. form) + -ane suffix2, formative of the names of paraffins.
Chemistry.
The paraffin of the heptacarbon series, having the formula C7H16: ‘of these hydrocarbons nine are possible and four are known’ ( Fownes's Chem. 1877).
