Etymology: < hearth n.1 + money n.In sense 1 rendering Old English cyricsceat churchset n. in a translation of a clause in the Laws of Cnut (which also contains the Old English word heorþ hearth n.1); the use in this translation is perhaps after hearth-penny n. (compare Coke's use in quot. 1660 at hearth-penny n.):OE Laws of Cnut (Nero) i. xi. §2. 294 Ga ælc cyricsceat into þam ealdan mynstre be ælcon frigan heorðe.
