Etymology: < heel n.1 + bone n.1, after classical Latin os calcis os calcis n.In quot. 1516 immediately after Middle French os du tallon (1496 in the passage translated; French os du talon), itself after the classical Latin term.
The largest of the human ankle bones, the posterior part of which forms the heel; (also) the homologous bone in other vertebrates (rare). Also called calcaneum, calcaneus, os calcis.
