单词 hen-cackle
释义

hen-cacklen.

Brit. /ˈhɛnˌkakl/, U.S. /ˈhɛnˌkæk(ə)l/, Australian English /ˈhenˌkæk(ə)l/, New Zealand English /ˈhenˌkɛk(ə)l/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: hen n.1, cackle n.
Etymology: < hen n.1 + cackle n.Use of the word in sense 3 is often attributed to mountaineer and ranger Evan Wilson, who is said to have first used it of Mt. Oates in New Zealand's Southern Alps. The motivation for use in this sense is unclear. Independent evidence for the sense ‘a trifle’ suggested in the following quot. appears to be lacking:1941 S. J. Baker N.Z. Slang vi. 57 Hen-cackle..is applied by mountaineers to a mountain that is easy to climb. Doubtless there is a wider application of the term since a mere hen-cackle, a trifle, seems to have been the origin of the application. The implication of quot. 1939 at sense 3 appears to be that the mountains so designated entail a climb gentle enough to allow mountaineers to chat with one another en route (compare sense 2). Compare also apparently isolated use of cackle in a similar sense:1936 Canterbury (N.Z.) Mountaineer 53 Went up and down that Baker Peak, as Barrer says a ‘cackle’, with indecent haste.
