A medium-sized bird of prey of the northern hemisphere, mainly of open lowlands and moorlands, Circus cyaneus, the adult male of which has pale grey plumage, the female and juvenile being brown and white with a barred tail; esp. the Eurasian form of this bird (the American subspecies being distinguished as northern harrier). Cf. harrier n.1 3.The relatively smaller male was formerly known also as blue hawk or blue kite, and female and juvenile birds are sometimes called ringtail. Despite the name, the bird is now rarely a threat to domestic poultry but its numbers in England have been severely reduced by trapping and killing due to its predation of grouse.
