Forms: 1900s– Anya Nya, 1900s– Anya-Nya, 1900s– Anyanya.
Origin: Probably either (i) a borrowing from Ma'di. Or (ii) a borrowing from Acholi. Etymons: Ma'di ɨ̄nyānyā; Ma'di ànyángà; Acholi ànyànyà.
Etymology: < a language of what is now South Sudan, probably either (i) Ma'di ɨ̄nyānyā poison, name of the guerrilla movement ( < ɨ̄nyā to poison), or (ii) Ma'di ànyángà name of the guerrilla movement, or (iii) Acholi ànyànyà poison (used against people).Ma'di and Acholi are Nilo-Saharan languages of Uganda and South Sudan. The form of the word may have changed through borrowing into the Lotuko language of South Sudan.
(The name of) a southern Sudanese guerrilla organization, engaged in conflict with northern Sudanese Arab troops in the period 1963–72. Also: a member of this organization.
